Tar Heels Will Open NCAA Tournament Play Vs. Gators

TAR HEELS WILL OPEN NCAA TOURNAMENT PLAY ON SUNDAY AT HOME
⢠Third-seeded and four-time defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion North Carolina (15-3) will open play in the 2019 NCAA Tournament at home on Mother's Day.
⢠At noon on Sunday at UNC Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium, the Tar Heels will host Florida, which won its Friday's game in Chapel Hill with Johns Hopkins. Sunday's game originally was scheduled for 1 p.m. but was moved up due to storms forecast for the area.
⢠Carolina is coming off a two-week break for final exams after winning its fourth ACC championship in a row on April 28 by beating top-ranked and previously undefeated Boston College. The Tar Heels are riding a six-game winning streak.
⢠UNC entered the NCAA Tournament ranked No. 3 in the IWLCA poll and No. 2 in the Inside Lacrosse D1 Media poll. Ā
⢠ESPN3 will stream Sunday's game live online. Matt Krause will have the play-by-play call.
⢠UNC is making its 21st appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 24 years as a varsity program, including its 15th in a row. The Tar Heels are in pursuit of their eighth trip to the NCAA Tournament semifinals in 11 years.
⢠Carolina is seeking its third NCAA title after winning the 2013 and 2016 championships.Ā

⢠Parking will be available in the Raleigh Road Visitors Lot, the Bell Tower Deck and the Cobb Deck. Fans should plan to allow extra time to reach Sunday's game because UNC's commencement ceremonies are scheduled for 9 a.m. that day and may affect parking and traffic.
⢠Tickets are $10 for adults (age 18+), $5 for children (7-17) and seniors (55+), $3 for students and free for kids age 6 and younger.

⢠Not quite two months ago, UNC beat Florida, 11-9, in Gainesville. Carolina went on a 9-1 run to take an early lead, then withstood a late rally to win. Florida native Olivia Ferrucci had three goals and two assists for UNC.
⢠The Tar Heels are 5-2 in Chapel Hill against the Gators but have lost the last two (2016 and 2018).

ORTEGA SMASHING RECORDS
⢠Jamie Ortega is on the verge of the first 100-point season in UNC history. She enters Sunday's game with a school-record 97 points in 2019. The previous school record was 89 points, set last year by Katie Hoeg (who has 92 points this season, just behind Ortega).Ā
⢠Ortega also is on the brink of breaking the Carolina record for goals in a season. She enters Sunday with 71 goals. The school record is 72, set by Molly Hendrick in 2017.
⢠Ortega broke the UNC program record for most points in a season with her 12-point performance in the ACC Tournament win over Virginia Tech. Those 12 points are a UNC school record, and set an ACC Tournament single-game record as well.Ā
⢠Ortega's 19 points (13 goals and six assists) in winning ACC Tournament MVP honors set a new tournament record. Ortega broke the previous record of 17 set by Alex Aust of Maryland in 2012.
HOEG ON VERGE OF UNC CAREER ASSIST RECORD
⢠Junior attacker Kate Hoeg is one of the top playmakers in UNC history and is tied for first in Tar Heel history in assists in just her second year as a starter.
⢠Hoeg enters Sunday's game with 121 career assists tied with Ela Hazar (2015-18) as Carolina's career assist leader.Ā
⢠Hoeg's 62 assists this year eclipse her own previous school record for most by a Tar Heel in a season (50, set last year).

⢠Carolina sophomore Emma Trenchard earned ACC Defender of the Year recognition this year, while Jenny Levy was named ACC Coach of the Year.Ā
⢠Trenchard was a first-team All-ACC selection and enters the NCAA Tournament having collected 22 ground balls while ranking second on her team in caused turnovers with 16 and winning six draw controls. A native of Windsor, Connecticut, Trenchard earned a spot on the ACC Championship All-Tournament team for her contributions to the Tar Heels' team title. Her efforts have helped UNC rank second in the ACC in fewest goals allowed per game (8.17).Ā
⢠Levy was voted the ACC Coach of the Year for the fourth time after guiding the second-seeded Tar Heels to the ACC Championship title for the fourth consecutive year. UNC's four consecutive tournament championships (2016-19) stands as the second longest streak in conference history. The Tar Heels, who will take a 15-3 overall record into the NCAA Tournament, have won 41 of their last 45 games against ACC opponents, including 12 ACC Championship tournament wins in a row. Levy, in her 24th season, ranks first all-time among ACC women's lacrosse coaches in career wins with 322.
