UNC Looks Forward To Challenging Schedule In 2019
June 21, 2019 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Nine home games at Karen Shelton Stadium highlight the 2019 schedule for the North Carolina field hockey team. UNC, the 2018 NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference champion, opens the season on Aug. 30 at Michigan, with the Tar Heels' home opener on Sept. 6 against Princeton.
"Our schedule is as tough as always," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We want to be well prepared for the postseason, so we want the entire schedule to challenge us and make us better. That's what we plan for and what we expect. I'm excited about the season ahead – the ACC will be as challenging as always, and we'll all benefit from the launch of the ACC Network, which will give additional exposure to our sport."
The Tar Heels spend their first two weekends playing in challenge events where UNC and Wake Forest will represent the ACC against other leagues. Carolina once again opens the season at the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, which this year will be hosted by Michigan in Ann Arbor. UNC faces the host Wolverines on Aug. 30 at 6 p.m., then meets Iowa on Sept. 2 in a neutral-site matchup.
The Tar Heels' first home games of the season are the following weekend, Sept. 6 and 8, as UNC hosts the ACC-Ivy League Conference Crossover for the first time. On Sept. 6, Wake Forest meets Penn and North Carolina takes on Princeton. The teams switch opponents on Sept. 8.
UNC opens ACC play on Sept. 20 at home against Louisville. The Tar Heels also host Duke (Oct. 4) and Boston College (Oct. 25) for ACC home matchups, and they travel to face Virginia (Sept. 27), Syracuse (Oct. 12) and Wake Forest (Oct. 18).
In addition to the season-opening events, the Tar Heels will play non-conference games against William & Mary (home on Sept. 15), Appalachian State (Boone, N.C., on Sept. 22), James Madison (Harrisonburg, Va., on Sept. 29), Albany (Albany, N.Y., on Oct. 13), Liberty (home on Oct. 20) and Saint Joseph's (home on Nov. 3).
This fall marks the debut of the ACC Network, and the lineup will include at least three UNC home field hockey games. The ACC Network will air the UNC-Penn matchup on Sept. 8, as well as the Wake Forest-Princeton game that morning. Carolina also will be on the network the following weekend against William & Mary (Sept. 15) and on Oct. 4 against Duke.
Boston College will host this year's ACC Championship Nov. 7-10, with ACC Network coverage throughout. NCAA Championship is set for Nov. 22 and 24 in Winston-Salem, N.C., hosted by Wake Forest.
