Schenk Joins UNC Field Hockey Staff
June 7, 2019 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Robbert Schenk has joined the UNC field hockey staff as an assistant coach, head coach Karen Shelton announced Friday. Schenk will work with all aspects of the program with a focus on the Tar Heel offense.
"He's going to be an outstanding addition to our staff," Shelton said. "He's an offensive specialist who brings a ton of international experience, and we're excited to have him join our team. He's completely new to the college game, which I think is a real plus – he brings fresh eyes and innovative ideas."
Schenk has played and coached in Holland, England and Australia. Most recently he served as Hockey Development Manager at Hurstpierpoint College, a boarding school in the U.K. There he redesigned the school's sport guidelines and programs and coached all levels and abilities. Prior to that, he was Head of Hockey Development at Caterham School, also in the U.K.
His playing career has included stints with Premier League clubs in Den Hague, the Netherlands; and Melbourne, Australia; as well as East Grinstead and Oxted, England.
"Although I'm new to collegiate field hockey, I know about UNC's outstanding tradition and I'm honored to be a part of it,' Schenk said. "This is such a strong program, but there's always room for improvement and I'll work hard to make sure we continue to move forward. I'm excited to be a Tar Heel and ready to get to work."
UNC opens the 2019 preseason on August 12. The Tar Heels are coming off one of the finest seasons in program history, with a 23-0 record and the 2018 NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference championships.
