U.S. Takes Pan Am Bronze Behind Matson Hat Trick
August 11, 2019 | Field Hockey
Behind a hat trick from UNC sophomore Erin Matson, the U.S. Women's Field Hockey National Team beat Chile 5-1 Friday to earn a bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Matson was one of five Tar Heels representing the USA, joining Carolina graduates Ashley Hoffman, Lauren Moyer, Caitlin Van Sickle and Julia Young on the roster.
Â
The match against Chile was a personal landmark for Young, as she celebrated her 50th cap (aka international appearance).
Â
Moyer scored the first goal of the match, giving Tar Heels four of the five scores on the day. Matson's first goal, which proved to be the gamewinner, came on a backhand shot early in the second quarter and she went on to add two more.

In the semifinals, the U.S. fell 2-0 to Canada, which went on to lose to Argentina in the gold medal match. By winning the Pan Am games, Argentina earned a spot in the 2020 Summer Olympics. The U.S. will continue trying to qualify to compete in Tokyo.
Meanwhile back in Chapel Hill, UNC kicks off the 2019 preseason on Monday and starts practice on Tuesday, working toward the season opener on Aug. 30 at Michigan. For the complete schedule, click here.
