Tar Heels Add Performance Analyst To Staff
September 13, 2019 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Chris Fry has joined the UNC field hockey staff as the team's performance analyst, head coach Karen Shelton announced Friday. Fry's position is a first for the Tar Heel program.
"We're thrilled to welcome Chris to the staff," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "This is the direction that our game is going, and where the sports world is going in general. There's so much attention paid to analyzing performance and looking at trends in the way we play and in the way our opponents play. We want to continue to be on the cutting edge in that regard, and part of that is having a professional on our staff who is fully dedicated to maximizing the way we use video. Chris is a perfect fit."
Since February of 2017, Fry has worked as performance analyst for the USA Field Hockey Women's National Team. He has traveled to provide video analysis for games and tournaments around the world, including the World League Semi Finals in South Africa, the World League Final in New Zealand, the 2018 World Cup in England, and various locations for the FIH Pro League.
Fry, from Dorchester, England, previously worked as an assistant field hockey coach for the University of the Pacific and a performance analyst for the Wales National Team. He spent four seasons at Pacific, after working for four years with the Wales Senior Men's Team and U21 Men's Team.
While in Wales he also served as performance analyst for the Cardiff & Metropolitan Hockey Club Men's First Team, helping the squad to the England Hockey West Conference championship in 2012-13. In 2013 the team earned a promotion to the Euro Hockey League, becoming the first team from Wales to compete in the highest level of European club hockey.
In July 2018, Fry presented at the Hudl Elite User Conference in Las Vegas on his work using SportsCode in field hockey. His presentation was titled "Workflow Examples and Going Beyond Coding."
Fry graduated from Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in sport and exercise science, and went on to earn a master's degree from Cardiff in 2014. As a player for the men's field hockey first team at Cardiff Metropolitan, he helped his team to the West Conference Cup.
"I'm very grateful for the opportunity that Karen has given me, and I'm excited to be a Tar Heel," Fry said. "I look forward to using video and analytics to help our players develop their own game, and assist them in competing for ACC and national championships."
