Field Hockey Hits The Road To Take On Louisville
October 1, 2020 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Twelve days after opening the 2020 season with a win, the North Carolina field hockey team returns to action on Friday to kick off Atlantic Coast Conference play, taking on Louisville at the Cardinals' Trager Stadium. Game time is 4:30 p.m. and the action will be televised live on the ACC Network.

UNC is 1-0 following a nonconference win at Wake Forest on Sept. 20. Louisville is 2-0 overall and 1-0 in ACC play after two home-turf wins over Duke last weekend.

"We're excited to play on Friday," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "It's a tough road weekend, but it's an opportunity for us. And we do love going to Louisville – the last time we were there we won a championship and we really like it there. We're excited to play again and improve. We want to show we've grown since our opening game."

It's the Tar Heels' first time playing on the Trager Stadium turf since walking off that field with the NCAA Championship trophy in November of 2018. That season, UNC played five times in Louisville, including a regular-season win over UL, two games en route to the conference championship, and the NCAA semifinal and final games. Last season Carolina and Louisville met twice, with UNC winning at Shelton Stadium in Chapel Hill and then at the ACC Tournament in Newton, Mass.

After Friday's game, the Tar Heels have less than 48 hours before they play at Duke. They'll bus back to Chapel Hill after Friday's game in order to get ready to face the Blue Devils on Sunday in Durham, N.C. That game is set for noon and also will air on the ACC Network.

NOTING THE MATCHUP
• The Tar Heels have won their last 47 games, the longest current streak in Division I athletics.
• The last time UNC and Louisville met was Nov. 8, 2019, in the ACC Tournament semifinals in Newton, Mass. The Tar Heels won that game 3-1 and also took the regular-season matchup, 4-1 in Chapel Hill on Sept. 20.
• UNC leads the all-time series with Louisville 8-4. The Tar Heels have won the last four meetings, with Louisville's most recent win coming on Oct. 14, 2017 in what was UNC's home game but was played at Duke's facility in Durham, N.C., during a season when Carolina didn't have a home field. The Cardinals' last win against UNC in Louisville came the previous year, 1-0 on Oct. 15, 2016.
• For the second game in a row, the Tar Heels are returning to a spot for the first time since winning an NCAA title there. On Sept. 20, they opened the season at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C., where they won the 2019 NCAA title.
