Matson Earns ACC, National Honors
October 20, 2020 | Field Hockey
North Carolina junior Erin Matson has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. Matson had a hand in all three gamewinners as UNC (6-1 overall, 3-1 ACC) earned three victories last week, each by a one-goal margin.
On Wednesday Matson added another honor when she was named Play Safe/NFHCA National Offensive Player of the Week.
Â
Against Virginia on Monday (Oct. 12), Matson assisted on Meredith Sholder's go-ahead goal in the 52nd minute, and the Tar Heels went on to a 2-1 win. On Friday against Syracuse, Matson scored the game's only goal on a penalty corner in the 53rd minute of a 1-0 win. On Sunday against Duke, she scored the second goal of the game to tie the score at 2-2. In the 47th minute, she assisted on Eva Smolenaars' goal to pull UNC ahead 4-2. After Duke scored twice in the final 12 minutes and the game went into overtime, Matson set up Hannah Griggs' goal in the 65th minute as the Tar Heels won 5-4.
Â
Matson has either scored or assisted on the game-winning goal in all six UNC victories this season. She leads the ACC in goals (six), assists (six) and gamewinning goals (four).
Â
Syracuse goalkeeper Syd Taylor was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week and also the national defensive player of the week.
Â
The Tar Heels don't have a game this weekend after their Oct. 25 matchup at Boston College was postponed. Next up is the final game of the fall season, on Oct. 30 against Wake Forest at Karen Shelton Stadium. Â
