February 16, 2020 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL – Thirteen different players recorded a point and 29 received playing time as second-ranked North Carolina opened its 2020 home slate with a 22-5 win over Davidson on Sunday afternoon at Dorrance Field.
Two days removed from tying the school record for goals in a game in a 24-3 win at High Point, the Tar Heels totaled 38 points against the Wildcats, the most in program history. UNC had registered its previous high of 37 points on two occasions, against Longwood on April 15, 2007 and against Canisius on April 15, 2018.
Katie Hoeg (two goals and six assists) and Jamie Ortega (five goals and three assists) paced Carolina offensively, finishing with eight points each for the second straight game. All their points came in the first half, during which the Tar Heels built a 15-1 lead.
Marisa DiVietro (two goals and two assists) and Ida Farinholt (three goals and one assist) each posted four points. Melissa Sconone added three (one goal and two assists), while Scottie Rose Growney (one goal and one assist), Ally Mastroianni (two goals) and Tayler Warehime (two goals) rounded out UNC's multi-point performances.
With the win, Carolina improved to 3-0. Davidson dropped to 0-2. The Tar Heels have won all five games in the series, with Sunday's being the first between the two teams since 2003.
Through three games this season, UNC has outscored its opponents 61-15.

Key moment
- After scoring within the first 42 seconds of their first two games, the Tar Heels needed a bit more time to score their first goal Sunday. But once DiVietro found the back of the cage at the 27:49 mark of the first half, the floodgates opened. Carolina scored six more goals before Davidson got its first, but by then, the game was seemingly out of reach.
- With her third consecutive eight-point game, Hoeg moved past Becky Lynch (2009-12) and Aly Messinger (2013-16) for fourth on UNC's career points list with 233. Only Marie McCool (246 points from 2015-18), Abbey Friend (250 from 2011-14) and Corey Donohoe (256 from 2008-11) are ahead of Hoeg.
- Hoeg's six assists matched her career high, set on four previous occasions, most recently against James Madison in the season opener.
- Already Carolina's career leader in assists, Hoeg extended her record to 148.
- With her second straight eight-point game, Ortega moved past Molly Hendrick (2014-17) and is now tied with Ela Hazar (2015-18) for eighth on UNC's career points list with 221.
- Saturday's performance marked Ortega's 16th with five or more goals. She's up to 165 career goals, five shy of passing Kellie Thompson (1999-2002) for fifth on UNC's career goals list.
- With three assists, Ortega moved out of a tie with Thompson and Laura Zimmerman (2009-12) for 10th on UNC's career assists list. Ortega is up to 56 career assists.
- With two goals and two assists, DiVietro matched her career highs in both categories. She also set a career high with four points. She'd registered her previous high of three points on two occasions, most recently against Northwestern on March 17, 2018.
- Farinholt's three goals and four points were her most in 22 games as a Tar Heel. The graduate transfer from Cornell finished with four goals and five points against Yale on March 24, 2018.
- Senior Jackie Williams recorded the first two ground balls and caused turnovers of her career.
- After setting a career high with eight draw controls against High Point on Friday, Scottie Rose Growney tallied seven Sunday.
- Sophomore Brooklyn Neumen scored her first career goal with 11:35 left.
- Taylor Moreno, Kimber Hower and Maggie Skillman each took turns in goal. Skillman's appearance was the first of her career.
- Sconone continued her hot start to her career, finishing with three points (one goal and two assists) for the second time in three games. She's scored at least one goal in all three games, and her two assists were her most of the season.
- Despite starting Carolina's first two games, freshman Emily Nalls had yet to log any stats before Sunday. But against the Wildcats, she tallied an assist, two ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control.
- Freshman Julia Dorsey collected a team-high three ground balls, all the first of her career.
- Freshmen Anna Barton, Nicole Humphrey and Livi Lawton all scored their second career goals.
