Six Freshmen On Board As UNC Opens 2020 On Sunday
September 19, 2020 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Six freshmen are part of this season's 28-member roster for the North Carolina field hockey team, which opens the 2020 campaign on Sunday at Wake Forest. The Tar Heels take on the Demon Deacons at 2 p.m. at Kentner Stadium.
"I adore this freshman class," said UNC coach Karen Shelton, who is heading into her 40th season at the program's helm. "I think it's the strongest top to bottom we've had in years. A couple of them will have immediate impact and others are going to be developing but are starting from a higher platform. I'm really pleased with all of them."
The Tar Heel freshman class is made up of:
• Katie Dixon, No. 14, a midfielder from Cary, N.C.
• Dorrit Eisenbeis, No. 29, a forward from Cary, N.C.
• Mia Leonhardt, No. 33, a midfielder from Media, Pa.
• Ciana Riccardo, No. 8, a defender from Downingtown, Pa., and the younger sister of Romea Riccardo, a sophomore defender for the Tar Heels.
• Britt Schlatmann, No. 20, a defender/midfielder from Bloemendaal, the Netherlands.
• Kiersten Thomassey, No. 35, a midfielder from Westerville, Ohio.
The Tar Heels finished last season 23-0, winning NCAA and ACC Championships for the second year in a row.
Sunday's game, although against an ACC opponent, is the teams' designated non-conference matchup this fall. UNC will also end the season again the Demon Deacons, hosting them on Oct. 30 at Karen Shelton Stadium for this fall's conference game.
The game is not open to spectators and Wake Forest's campus is closed to the public, but fans can watch the game on ACC Network Extra here or follow on Twitter @UNCFieldHockey.
