WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The North Carolina field hockey team heads for Wake Forest on Sunday to open a condensed 2020 schedule that includes only Atlantic Coast Conference opponents. Game time at Kentner Stadium is 2 p.m.
The Wake Forest campus is not open to the public and there will be no fans allowed at the stadium or in the area around it, but the game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra and fans can follow live stats here and Twitter here.
Although between conference opponents, this game will not count in the ACC standings. The designated ACC matchup for UNC and Wake Forest will come in Chapel Hill on Oct. 30. For the entire schedule, click here.
Karen Shelton is entering her 40th season as the Tar Heels' head coach. As her team prepared to head to Winston-Salem, she spoke with GoHeels.com.
GoHeels: What are your feelings on finally getting to play?
Shelton: "We're excited to have the opportunity. We realize that not everybody around the country has this chance, and we're grateful that we do. It's been a long haul getting ready and finally the opener is here, so we're pumped and ready to go."
GH: Thoughts on opening the season at the same place where last season ended?
Shelton: "I hadn't even though of that, but we love Kentner Stadium. Last year we went over the night before, and this year we decided not to, to just over on game day. We're trying not to have that outside exposure when we can avoid it and keep our bubble tight. So that does worry me a little bit. Wake is tough, they're always tough and they play us so hard. And it will be different not having people in the stands. But we're just happy to have the chance to play."
GH: Usually you play a few scrimmages to see outside competition before the first game, but that didn't happen this year. Do you feel like that will have an impact on the opener?
Shelton: "This year in particular the fact we do have a large squad and we're able to have intrasquad scrimmages that are relatively competitive was helpful. I feel like we're in a good place. It doesn't simulate playing an ACC opponent, but we've done as much as we can do and we're excited to see how we do against outside competition."
