Tar Heels Announce Six-Game Spring Season
January 29, 2021 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC's spring field hockey season, usually a time to play scrimmage games and work toward the fall, will look different in 2021 as the Tar Heels play six "regular season" games with an eye on the NCAA Tournament.
North Carolina, the two-time defending national champion, opens the spring the same way it closed out the fall: hosting Louisville at Karen Shelton Stadium. The Cardinals will visit on March 5 for a rematch of the 2020 Atlantic Coast Conference title game back in November. The Tar Heels won that one 4-2 for the program's 23rd conference crown.
The Louisville game is one of three home games scheduled for this spring, with the others Boston College on March 19 and Duke on April 2. In addition, the Tar Heels will play at Wake Forest on March 13, at Virginia on April 9 and at Syracuse on April 18.
"We're excited to be playing again in the spring, and hopefully picking up where we left off in November," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We always have a spring season in which we practice and play scrimmage games, but it certainly will feel a bit different to have those games leading up to the NCAA Tournament. We can't wait to get started and face some great ACC competition."
UNC will host the NCAA Championship on May 7 and 9 at Karen Shelton Stadium. Because there was no NCAA Tournament in the fall, the winner will be considered the 2020 NCAA Champion.
