December 17, 2021 | Field Hockey
Four Tar Heels have been named to the U.S. Women's National Team for the 2022 Pan American Cup, scheduled for Santiago, Chile in late January. Erin Matson, Lauren Moyer, Ashley Sessa and Cassie Sumfest have been selected for the 20-player roster.
Â
While Matson and Moyer are among the most experienced members of the team and both competed as part of the U.S. squad at the 2017 Pan Am Games, the other two Tar Heels are among the newest to the team. Sumfest and Sessa both earned their first international caps in November. Â
Â
Matson and Sumfest were members of the 2021 UNC field hockey team, leading the Tar Heels to the program's fifth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Championship. Moyer played for UNC from 2013-16. Sessa signed with the Tar Heels in November and will be a Carolina freshman in 2022.
Â
The U.S. team will gather in California in early January for training then depart for Chile on Jan. 12, playing exhibitions against Chile and Uruguay before the start of the Pan Am Games on Jan. 19. The U.S. opens competition that day against Peru then meets Canada on Jan. 21 and Mexico on Jan. 23. For more information on the event, click here.
