February 27, 2021 | Track & Field
CLEMSON, S.C. – Six Tar Heels – including a relay team – came home with championships and both the men's and women's teams had improved finishes as UNC wrapped up competition Saturday at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Clemson's Indoor Track & Field Complex.
The Tar Heel men placed second overall, their highest team finish since 2014. The women were ninth, the best since a fifth-place finish in 2018.
Brandon Tubby (men's mile), Daniel McArthur (men's shot put) and the men's 4x400 relay team finished the weekend with gold.
In the men's mile, Tar Heels took the top two spots, with both clocking times under four minutes. Tubby's win came in 3:57.77, a personal best as well as a facility record, and Thomas Ratcliffe was second in 3:59.26, also a personal best. They're just the second and third Tar Heels to break the four-minute barrier in indoor competition, after program great Tony Waldrop. Allen Siegler ran a season-best 4:04.26, good for seventh place.
McArthur's title is his third in a row in shot put, following up on indoor wins in 2019 and 2020. He was named the ACC Championship MVP for men's field, based on overall points scored.
The Tar Heels also went back-to-back for titles in the men's 4x400 relay, with the team of Craig Saddler II, Ryan Saint-Germain, Onyedikachi Ohia-Enyia and Isaiah Palmer teaming for a season-best 3:08.56.
In addition to his relay gold, Palmer won silver in the 400m and bronze in the 200 with a lifetime-best 20.96.
