The Rivalry
The game is the 49th meeting in a series that dates back to the 1981-82 season.
• UNC leads the series 33-15 overall, but FSU has won the last five in a row.
• The teams met just three times (two FSU wins) before the Seminoles became ACC members in 1991-92. Carolina leads the series 32-13 since it became a conference rivalry.
• UNC's last win in the series came on Feb. 12, 2015, at Carmichael. In a battle of top-20 teams, the No. 17 Tar Heels came back from a 10-point second half deficit to beat the seventh-ranked Seminoles.
• In the most recent matchup, FSU won 78-64 in Tallahassee on Jan. 12, 2020. Then-senior Taylor Koenen led UNC with 22 points. Current senior Janelle Bailey added 11 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore Malu Tshitenge had 10 points and seven boards.
Notable Numbers
• Petra Holešínská's 21-point game at Virginia Tech marked her fourth 20-point game of the season, a team high, and her third in a row. Over the past three games, all off the bench, she's averaging 23.7 points and shooting 53.1 percent from the field, 50 percent from three (14-28).
• Buoyed by Holešínská's hot shooting, the Tar Heels are hitting 36.7 percent of their three-pointers over the past three games. In the first seven ACC games of the season, UNC shot 23.4 percent from three.
• After starting 2021 with two homecourt losses (Miami, VT) in which they shot a combined 29.5 percent, the Tar Heels have heated up in recent games, shooting 43.2 percent as a team over the last three outings (ND, Louisville, Virginia Tech).
• The Tar Heels shot better than 40 percent from the field once in their first six ACC games (46.9 at home vs. Syracuse), but have passed that mark in each of the past four games.
• Stephanie Watts is 13 points from reaching the 1,500-career-points mark. When she joins Janelle Bailey in passing that point, UNC will be one of two NCAA DI schools (Arkansas is the other) with two 1,500-point scorers on its current roster.
Deeper Bench This Season
Although the UNC roster is smaller this season (11 in 2020-21 compared with 15 in 2019-20), the Tar Heels are a far deeper team than last year and that has been evident in the first 15 games. UNC is averaging 26.3 points per game off the bench, with a high of 57 against High Point and a low of seven at Wake Forest. Last season the Tar Heels averaged just 8.5 points off the bench and in four games got zero points from subs.
• UNC's bench has outscored the opponent bench in all but the home games against Syracuse and Miami. (The Orange got 35 points off the bench while the Tar Heels got 26. Against the Hurricanes, the UNC bench had 11 and UM 15.) In comparison, last year's team saw its bench outscore the opposition just six times all year.
• In 10 ACC games this season, UNC has averaged 22.5 points off the bench, with seven at Wake Forest, 24 at Miami, 26 against Syracuse, 24 at home vs. Wake Forest, 11 at home vs. Miami, 24 vs. Virginia Tech, 27 at Syracuse, 24 at home vs. Notre Dame, 33 at Louisville and 25 at Virginia Tech.
• In further testament to the team's depth, UNC doesn't have a player ranked in the ACC's top 25 in minutes. Freshman Deja Kelly leads the team in minutes, playing 28.1 per game. Freshman Alyssa Ustby is next, playing 27.5.
• Bailey leads the team in minutes vs. ACC opponents, averaging 31.1 minutes per game, still not in the league's top 25.
• Petra Holešínská leads the team in 20-point games this season with four, all off the bench.
UNC is 8-7 overall and 3-7 in the ACC. Florida State is 5-4 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
