NOTRE DAME, IND.—Jamie Ortega scored four of her five goals in the second half and lifted top-ranked North Carolina to an 11-10 win at No. 4 Notre Dame on a wet Saturday afternoon at Arlotta Stadium.
Carolina led in the early going, 5-1. The Fighting Irish ended the first half on a 6-1 run and grabbed a 7-6 lead at the break, UNC's first halftime deficit of the season.
The Tar Heels put together a 3-0 run in a steady rainstorm coming out of halftime (with two of the goals coming from Ortega) and took a 9-7 lead with 17:14 to go.
Taylor Moreno (12-0) and the UNC defense allowed double-digit goals for the first time this season but held the Irish scoreless for the first 14:56 of the second half, seizing control of the game and securing Carolina's 19th consecutive win.
Carolina is off to a 12-0 start this season, the best in school history, topping the previous record of 11-0 set in 2014.
After Caitlyn Wurzburger received a yellow card with 1:26 remaining and with Carolina clinging to a one-goal lead, the Tar Heels killed the penalty situation for the rest of the game to secure the win. Moreno made six saves and improved her career record to 41-5 in the cage.
Ortega scored at least five goals for the sixth time in 2021 and the 24th time in her career. She has scored four or more goals in 10 of 12 games this season.
Wurzburger posted one of her best games yet as a freshman with two goals and one assist, while graduate student Kerrigan Miller added a pair of goals and five draw controls. Scottie Rose Growney and Tayler Warehime also scored goals.
Katie Hoeg dished out two assists for her 53rd career multiple-assist game. Julia Dorsey also had an assist.
Ally Mastroianni's eight draw controls helped Carolina win 16 of 22 draws in the game as a team. Notre Dame had 16 ground balls to UNC's nine, and the Irish forced 13 turnovers while committing 11.
Maddie Howe scored three goals for the Irish, and goalie Bridget Deehan was impressive with 14 saves.
