UNC Awarded Top Overall Seed in NCAA FH Tournament
April 24, 2021 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Two-time defending champion North Carolina will head into the 2020 NCAA Field Hockey Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed, the NCAA announced Saturday night. In this season's condensed, 12-team event, the top four seeds all get first-round byes so UNC will open play May 2 in the second round. The Tar Heels will face the winner of Friday's first-round matchup between Miami (Ohio) and Stanford.
The first and second round games are all split between two sites, with UNC and Penn State hosting. Carolina also will host the semifinals and championship at Karen Shelton Stadium on May 7 and 9.
"We're always excited to be part of the tournament field, and especially this year," said UNC coach Karen Shelton, who leads the Tar Heels into a record 37th tournament. "It's been a challenging year for everyone and we're grateful to be playing in the tournament and to be hosting here in Chapel Hill.
"Since we've only faced ACC teams this year, there's more uncertainty and less familiarity than usual heading into the tournament. So we'll look forward to seeing the other teams in Friday's games and preparing to face either Miami or Stanford on Sunday."
Carolina (16-1) is the top overall seed for the third year in a row. The Tar Heels reached the field via the Atlantic Coast Conference's automatic bid. The Tar Heels earned the berth with a 3-2 double-overtime win over Wake Forest Friday in the ACC Automatic Qualifier game.
The Tar Heels are making their 18th consecutive NCAA Championship appearance and a record 37thoverall. UNC holds the NCAA records for tournament appearances, tournament games played (98) and tournament victories (70).
UNC's second-round game will be the program's 99th in NCAA Tournament play. The Tar Heels are 70-28 all-time in NCAA play.
North Carolina is hosting first and second round games for the 22nd time in program history. The Tar Heels are 30-2 in tournament games played in Chapel Hill.
