Field Hockey Announces Team Awards

The UNC field hockey program has announced team award winners for the 2020 season, which stretched into the spring of 2021 and culminated with the Tar Heels' ninth NCAA title.
After sharing the team's Anderson Mark of Excellence Most Valuable Player Award last season, with then-senior Yentl Leemans, Erin Matson again claimed the recognition following a year in which she earned National Player of the Year honors for the second year in a row. Matson also was a repeat winner of the Keller Award for Open-Field Assists with a total of eight during the season.
Courtnie Williamson, who captained the Tar Heels in 2020-21, was the recipient of the Carmen and Michael Hooker Leadership Award.
Meredith Sholder, who returned to the field after missing the 2019 season and started all 20 games, was the recipient of the Marjorie Moses Schwab Unsung Hero Award.
Cassie Sumfest, who also returned to the starting lineup after missing the previous season, was named the Laree Beans Practice Player of the Year.
Bryn Boylan, who as a senior started 19 of 20 games and went 4-for-4 on penalty strokes, earned the Dawson Family Most Improved Player Award.
Eva Smolenaars, a starter in the midfield who earned second-team All-America honors, won the Lingo Award as the Players' Player of the Year.
Amanda Hendry, UNC's starting goalkeeper for the past four years and a first-team All-America selection as a senior, earned the Caitlin "Poppy" Van Sickle Defensive Player of the Year Award for the second year in a row.
Kiersten Thomassey, who played in all 20 games in the midfield as a true freshman, was selected as the recipient of the Ken and Cheryl Williams Rookie of the Year Award.
All of the honorees will be recognized on plaques installed in the team room at Karen Shelton Stadium.
UNC, the three-time defending NCAA Champion, opens the 2021 season on August 27 at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in Iowa City, Iowa. For a look at the full schedule for the upcoming season, click here.

Each year, the Carolina field hockey family welcomes new freshmen into the fold. The freshman who contributes the most to the team in her inaugural season is selected as the Rookie of the Year. Named for Marjorie Moses "Dee" Schwab, this award recognizes that individual who plays an integral part in the team's overall successes but receives little attention. This player is usually a defensive workhorse who quietly does what it takes on a consistent basis.

This award goes to the player who distinguishes herself on the defensive side of the ball. A great team must have great defense, and on any outstanding defense there is a player who sets the tone and provides the backbone. The award honors Caitlin Van Sickle, a three-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year and one of the finest defenders in program history.
