Matson, Sumfest Voted Tar Heel Team Captains

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior Erin Matson will serve as this year's Carolina field hockey team captain and graduate student Cassie Sumfest will be the vice captain, UNC coach Karen Shelton announced Friday. The captains are selected each year in voting by the team.
"I'm pleased and proud that the team has elected Erin and Cassie to represent us," Shelton said. "I always think the selection of captains is a reflection on the team, and our players have picked two outstanding leaders as captains for this season."
Matson, who served as a vice captain last season, is a forward from Chadds Ford, Pa. Sumfest is a midfielder from Lewisburg, Pa.
Both are returning starters for the Tar Heels, defending Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA Champions. UNC opens the 2021 season on Aug. 27, taking on Michigan at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in Iowa City, Iowa. Carolina's first home game is on Sept. 19 against Miami.
The Tar Heels will host Duke at Karen Shelton Stadium on Sunday at 11 a.m. for a preseason scrimmage.
