CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After playing its last three games and six of the past seven on the road, the top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team returns home to Karen Shelton Stadium on Friday afternoon to host No. 11 Syracuse. The Atlantic Coast Conference battle starts at 3 p.m. and admission is free.
The match-up has been designated as UNC's Power of Pink Game and fans are invited to wear pink in support of the fight against breast cancer. The first 400 fans at the game will get free pink koozies.
The Tar Heels are raising funds to support the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center with a goal of $5,000. To donate, click here.
UNC comes into the matchup 11-0 on the season and 3-0 in ACC play. Syracuse is 12-2 overall and 2-1 in league action.
This is Alumni Weekend for UNC, with more than 40 former players returning to Chapel Hill. The group will be recognized at halftime.
Matson Milestone
With two goals at Connecticut on Sunday, Erin Matson tied the all-time ACC points record, held by Maryland's Katie O'Donnell, who scored 306 from 2007-10. Matson comes into Friday's game with 306 points in 91 career games. Her next point will make her the all-time scoring leader in ACC history.
She is the reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Week after winning the honor for the third week in a row. She has been recognized four times this season and 18 times in her career. She's also this week's NFHCA National Offensive Player of the Week.
Noting the Tar Heels
• Five of Carolina's nine first-quarter goals this season have come from freshmen (three by Ryleigh Heck, all in the first two-and-a-half minutes of play, and two by Ashley Sessa, including what proved to be the gamewinner in the 10th minute of play at BC).
• The Tar Heels have outscored opponents 25-5 before halftime this season. Iowa and Princeton, each with two goals at the break, and Liberty, with a first-quarter goal, are the only teams to score on UNC before halftime this season.
• Twelve different players have scored at least one goal for UNC this season.
• Through 11 games, the Tar Heels are outshooting opponents 200-78 and outscoring them 47-12.
• The game at Boston College marked the first time this season an opponent has outshot UNC. The Eagles took 20 shots, a season high by a Carolina opponent, to UNC's 15.
