UNC Takes On Saint Joseph's For Field Hockey Final Four Trip
November 12, 2022 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – When UNC hosted Saint Joseph's on Oct. 23 for the final regular season home field hockey game of 2022, the Tar Heels suspected they might get another chance to play on their home turf. Indeed they did, earning the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and the right to host postseason games.
Sunday, Carolina hosts SJU again and the Tar Heels know this is their final chance to play at Karen Shelton Stadium. The winner of the second-round game moves on to the NCAA semifnals in Storrs, Conn., next weekend and gets to finish its season at the final four.
Game time at Karen Shelton Stadium is noon. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors, and are available for purchase at the gate. (Credit cards only – no cash.) UNC students get in free with a OneCard.
The top-ranked Tar Heels (18-0) and No. 9 Hawks (16-4) are coming at the game from very different historical perspectives: North Carolina is the all-time leader in NCAA Field Hockey Tournament wins with a total of 74, including Friday's 5-1 first-round win over Delaware. Saint Joseph's 3-1 win over Wake Forest on Friday was its first-ever victory in NCAA Tournament play.
It's the final home turf appearance for Erin Matson, the leading scorer in Atlantic Coast Conference history, and for Meredith Sholder, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and ACC Tournament MVP, each playing a fifth season for Carolina.
Fourth-year seniors on the roster are Brooke Behan, Madison Orobono, Romea Riccardo, Steph Weber and Paityn Wirth. They were recognized at Senior Day prior to the last meeting with the Hawks.
• Erin Matson comes into Sunday's game one assist shy of tying UNC's career record, currently held by Katelyn Falgowski with 63 assists.
• UNC is 48-2 all-time at Karen Shelton Stadium. The Tar Heels are 8-0 in NCAA Tournament play and 13-0 overall in postseason play including five ACC Tournament games at home since moving into Shelton Stadium prior to the 2018 season.
