CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – On Friday afternoon, UNC officially cemented a spot in the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament field. On Sunday night, the top-ranked Tar Heels got details.
North Carolina, the Atlantic Coast Conference Champion and recipient of the league's automatic bid, has been named the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament field for the fourth time in the past five years. The Tar Heels (17-0) will make a record 39th appearance in the field, hosting games on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at Karen Shelton Stadium.
"We're proud to be one of eighteen teams still practicing this week," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "Congratulations to all the remaining teams. We're looking forward to hosting in Chapel Hill this weekend and playing at least one more time on our home field."
Delaware and Lehigh will meet Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Chapel Hill in an opening round game, with the winner advancing to take on UNC at noon on Friday in the first round. Saint Joseph's and Wake Forest will meet at 2:30 p.m. in the other first-round game at KSS with the winners playing Sunday at 1 p.m. in the second round of play. The winner of Sunday's game earns a spot in the NCAA semifinals in Storrs, Conn.
The Tar Heels are one of five ACC teams in the field, with Wake Forest, Virginia, Syracuse and Louisville receiving at-large bids.
Carolina is making its 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. UNC holds the NCAA records for tournament appearances (39, including 2022), tournament games played (102) and tournament victories (73).
