Volleyball Announces 2022 Fall Schedule
May 27, 2022 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL - Head coach Joe Sagula announced the North Carolina volleyball team's Fall 2022 schedule on Friday, highlighted by 13 home matches, including the ACC/BIG Ten Challenge and nine conference matchups in Carmichael Arena.
UNC faces nine 2021 NCAA Tournament participants in 2022, including two second round, one regional finalist and two national semifinalist teams.
"It's going to be a really challenging slate for us, especially right off the bat," Sagula said. "We're excited to be playing a lot of quality home matches."
Before the official start to the season, the Tar Heels split in two for their annual Blue/White Scrimmage (Aug. 19) in Carmichael Arena. The next day, Carolina welcomes High Point (Aug. 20) for an exhibition match.
The Tar Heels kick off the 2022 regular season schedule in Colorado, taking on Colorado State in the season-opener on Aug. 26 in Fort Collins.
While in the Centennial State, Carolina also plays two matches at the Northern Colorado Tournament, playing both the Bears and UC Santa Barbara on Aug. 27.
The Tar Heels then return to Chapel Hill to open up their home schedule, hosting South Carolina (Sep. 2) and Arizona (Sep. 3), before heading to the Queen City for a match at Charlotte (Sep. 6).
Then, for the first time since 2019, Carolina hosts the ACC/BIG Ten Challenge, welcoming Michigan State (Sep. 9) and Michigan (Sep. 10) to Carmichael Arena.
The Tar Heels cap their non-conference schedule at the VCU Invitational in Richmond, Va., on Sep. 16 and 17, going up against the host Rams, Old Dominion and UMBC.
"Based on the success we had last season, we felt like we were ready to take on a few more challenges in during non-conference this year," Sagula said. "We hope it will prepare us for ACC play and help us move up in the conference. It will allow us to be battle-ready when we open conference play."
Carolina kicks off its ACC schedule on the road at 2021 Final Four participant Pittsburgh on Sep. 23 before traveling to Virginia on Sep. 25.
"Every road match in the conference is always a challenge now, no matter who we're playing. We're hoping playing in environments like Colorado State and against quality teams in our non-conference schedule will prepare us well," Sagula said.
The Tar Heels host their first two ACC matches on Sep. 30 and Oct. 2, taking on Miami and Florida State.
Carolina then travels to Wake Forest (Oct. 7) and Virginia Tech (Oct. 9), before welcoming Boston College (Oct. 14) and Syracuse (Oct.16).
The Tar Heels have two Tobacco Road matchups on the slate: at NC State (Oct. 19) and at Duke (Oct. 23).
Georgia Tech (Oct. 28), a team who made it to the Elite Eight in 2021, and Clemson (Oct. 30) will both make the trip to Chapel Hill.
Carolina then heads north to Notre Dame (Nov. 4) and to Louisville (Nov. 6), a program that made the Final Four last season.
A week later, on Nov. 13, the Tar Heels then welcome the Cardinals to Carmichael Arena.
"We have the unique situation of playing Louisville on the road, but then playing them at home the next week," Sagula said. "We know we have two weekends where we will be playing one of the best teams in the country."
UNC's final road match comes in Tallahassee on Nov. 18 at Florida State.
The last two regular season home matches are against Duke (Nov. 23) and Virginia (Nov. 26).
"We have quality teams coming to Carmichael this year. We're excited that our fans will be able to see high-level volleyball," Sagula said.
The 2022 NCAA Tournament begins on Dec. 1. The first four rounds will be hosted on campus sites according to seeding by the NCAA Selection Committee. The NCAA Semifinals and Championship will be held at CHI Health Center in Omaha, Neb. on Dec. 15 and 17, 2022.
