CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Tim Broenink has joined the North Carolina field hockey program as an assistant coach, UNC head coach Erin Matson announced on Monday. A native of the Netherlands, Broenink brings high-level international coaching experience to Chapel Hill, in addition to his collegiate background.
"As a program, staff, and University, we are very excited to welcome Tim to the Carolina family," Matson said. "He has a wealth of knowledge and experience internationally and domestically. He also brings a contagious, positive energy that goes hand-in-hand with the way we operate. There is no doubt Tim will do whatever it takes to help set our student-athletes up for success, on and off the pitch."
Broenink spent the last four years as the head coach of the Norway Men's National Team, guiding the squad to a bronze medal, the first in Norwegian history, at the 2019 Euro Hockey Championship Men IV. Also in 2019, he coached the Norwegian club Kringsja to a gold medal at the Euro Hockey Club Championship IV.
He also has extensive experience coaching youth and adult club teams in the Netherlands. He is certified as an educator by both FIH and EHF.
Broenink has spent the last two seasons in the Atlantic Coast Conference as part of the staff at Syracuse.
"It's a great honor for me to be here," Broenink said. "I would like to thank the entire athletic department for giving me this opportunity, especially Coach Matson. I have rarely felt more welcome than here at UNC. I am very excited to start this journey and will do my best to facilitate the needs and wishes of our student-athletes. I'm looking forward to working within this talented, knowledgeable and inspiring group of student-athletes and staff."
At Carolina he joins a staff that also includes assistant coaches Caitlin Van Sickle, a Tar Heel alum heading into her second season on the staff, and Manuel Garcia Nieto, who served as a volunteer assistant last season and recently was promoted to assistant coach.
