Three Tar Heels Called Up For Training Camp, Matches With U-20 National Team
February 15, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Three current and former University of North Carolina women's soccer players in Tessa Dellarose, Savy King and Ally Sentnor have been called up to the U.S. Under-20 Women's Youth National Team for a training camp in Bogotá, Colombia, from Feb. 18-28.
Dellarose, King and Sentnor were all part of the Concacaf qualifying roster that secured the USWYNT's spot in the U-20 World Cup.
The trip will also feature two matches against the Colombia U-20 WNT, the hosts of the 2024 Under-20 FIFA Women's World Cup. The first game will be on Feb. 25 at Estadio El Campín – the main soccer stadium in Colombia's capital – with the second contest taking place on Feb. 28 at Estadio de Techo, a smaller venue.
Â
The training camp and exhibition games will serve as excellent preparation for the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, which will be held from Aug. 31 to Sept. 22, 2024, and will include players born on or after Jan. 1, 2004.
A defender, Dellarose was selected to the U-20 National Team that helped the Americans qualify for the 2024 U-20 World Cup with its runner-up finish at the Concacaf Championships in 2023. She played in all five games of the tournament and scored a goal against Jamaica.Â
Dellarose was one of only nine Tar Heels to appear in all 23 matches during her sophomore season in 2023 and earned three starts. She averaged 33.8 minutes per game and finished the season with one goal and two assists, with her first career goal coming in her first start of the season.Â
A fast and physical defender, King was one of the country's top players at the U-17 WYNT level before moving up to the U-20s in 2023. She started all five games at the Concacaf Women's U-20 Championship last June, helping the U.S. to a runner-up finish while qualifying for the 2024 U-20 World Cup.
King began her freshman season at UNC soon after, starting all 23 matches and leading the team with 2,030 minutes at center back. She was named to the All-ACC Second Team, ACC All-Freshman Team and United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Second Team in addition to twice being tabbed the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.Â
A year after captaining the U-20 team in the 2022 World Cup, Sentnor played in all five games for the stars and stripes at the 2023 Concacaf Women's U-20 Championship, earning four starts. She totaled four goals and two assists to lead the USA, which included a brace in a 5-2 win over Canada to win the group.Â
Returning to Chapel Hill for her redshirt-sophomore season, Sentnor started all 23 contests and concluded the season with a team-high 11 goals, seven assists and 29 points, including four goals and three assists in the NCAA Tournament. She was named the ACC Midfielder of the Year, also garnering United Soccer Coaches Third Team All-America, All-Atlantic Region First Team and All-ACC First Team praise.
Sentnor and King were the respective No. 1 and No. 2 overall picks in the 2024 NWSL Draft in January. They become the second Tar Heel duo to receive the first and second overall Draft picks in UNC history, joining Crystal Dunn (No. 1, Washington Spirit) and Kealia Ohai (No. 2, Houston Dash) in 2014.
Additionally, King and Sentnor were both nominated for the prestigious U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year award.
