Women’s Lacrosse Races Past Clemson, 18-9

CLEMSON, S.C. – The eighth-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team's high-paced offense and lockdown defense was on full display Saturday afternoon during an 18-9 win over No. 20 Clemson at the Clemson Lacrosse Complex in South Carolina.
Following the win, the Tar Heels improve to 5-2 (2-1 ACC) on the year while the Tigers fall to 402 (1-2 ACC).

How It Happened
- After conceding the game's opening goal, Carolina responded by going on a 6-0 run that would last until the 11:30 mark in the second quarter.
- Ashley Humphrey got UNC on the board with an assist from Caitlyn Wurzburger. The assist marked the 100th of Wurzburger's career.
- The Tar Heels held a 3-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter with Alyssa Long assisting two of those three goals.
- Carolina's defense posed several 1v1 challenges for the Clemson offense and did not allow a goal from 13:16 in the first to 11:30 in the second, the longest stretch the Tigers didn't convert.
- UNC doubled its goal production in the second frame, highlighted by Caroline Godine getting a hat trick in a five minute stretch.
- The second quarter scoring onslaught began when Humphrey fed Wurzburger, which was the 150th assist of Humphrey's career.
- Carolina went into the break up 9-4 and held a 15 shot and six draw control advantage.
- Continuing to run up the score with its high-paced offense, UNC added six more goals in the third quarter to extend its lead to 15-7.
- Wurzburger and Kiley Mottice got hat tricks of their own with the first and last goals of the second half, respectively.
- Godine netted her game-high fifth goal to start the fourth quarter while Mottice got her career-high fourth goal to make it 18-9 at the end, matching UNC's biggest lead of the contest.
Inside the Box Score
- UNC dominated on all facets of the game including 20-10 on the draw. Bailey Horne had a game-high seven draw controls followed by Emily Nalls with five.
- The Tar Heels out-shot the Tigers 38-20 and 34-15 on target.
- Godine finished the game with five goals and two assists. Her seven points matched her single-game career high.
- Wurzburger also had seven points behind three goals and four assists, matching her career high for the sixth time.
- McKenna Harden had two caused turnovers to lead all players as UNC ended with six to CU's three.
- Carolina's defense limited Clemson to its fewest goals all season.
- Alecia Nicholas made six saves between the pipes while Clemson's keeper made 16.

- Wurzburger has recorded at least one point in 64 of her 70 career appearances and is on a 34-game streak of notching at least one. She has also scored at least one goal in 59 of those 70 career games.
- Humphrey has recorded at least one point in 43 of her 44 career appearances. She has also dished out at least one assist in 41 of her 44 games and has scored at least one goal in 36.
- The Tar Heels improve to 3-2 against ranked opponents this year.
- North Carolina is 80-10 in its last 90 games against ACC opponents.
