Long’s Six Goals Lead Carolina Past Virginia Tech, 13-9

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Led by Alyssa Long's career-high six goals and seven points, the 14th-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team secured a 13-9 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at Dorrance Field.
The Tar Heels improve to 8-5 (4-3 ACC) on the year while the Hokies drop to 8-6 (2-5).
Prior to the game, UNC honored its graduating class in Reilly Casey, Olivia Dirks, Gabi Hall, Bailey Horne, Ashley Humphrey, Livi Lawton, Long, Emily Nalls, Flynn Reed, Amelia Sheehan, Sophie Student and Caitlyn Wurzburger.

How It Happened
- Long kicked off scoring with the first goal of the game before Kiley Mottice put the Tar Heels up by two.
- The Hokies leveled the score at two apiece, but Long's second of the day gave the home team a narrow one-goal edge after 15 minutes.
- Virginia Tech netted the first two of the second quarter to go up 4-3 before Wurzburger sparked a 3-0 run.
- The visitors tallied two more near the end of the second frame, but Carolina maintained a slight 7-6 lead heading into the break.
- A successful free position attempt from the Hokies evened things up at seven each, but back-to-back goals from Long and Caroline Godine gave UNC back a two-goal lead at the end of the third quarter.
- The Tar Heels out-scored the Hokies 6-3 in the final half, including 4-2 in the fourth quarter.
- Long added two more goals to cap off her career day as UNC outlasted VT for a 13-9 final score.
