U.S. Falls To Korea DPR In U20 World Cup Semifinals, Will Play For Bronze Medal
September 18, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CALI, Colombia – The United States U20 Youth National Team suffered a 1-0 loss to reigning Asian champions Korea DPR on Wednesday night in the semifinals of the 2024 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup in Cali, Colombia.Â
Team USA will now compete for bronze on Saturday, Sept. 21, against the winner of the Japan-Netherlands semifinal. Kickoff will be at 5 p.m. ET at the Estadio El Campín in the Colombian capital of Bogotá.
Current North Carolina junior Maddie Dahlien, along with former UNC stars Savy King and Ally Sentnor, have been representing the red, white and blue at the U20 World Cup. Dahlien is one of 12 college players on the U.S. U20 roster while Sentnor and King make up two of the eight pros currently playing in the National Women's Soccer League.Â
Wearing the captain's armband, Sentnor is the USA's most-capped player and top scorer with 22 caps and 11 international goals. Three of those 12 goals have come in a World Cup, with two being in this tournament. (Note: her game-tying goal vs. Germany in the quarterfinals was ruled by FIFA as an own goal).Â
Dahlien, who has seen valuable minutes off the bench in all six World Cup games thus far, subbed in during the 78th minute. She has six international goals and one assist in 14 USYNT caps. Two of those goals came during group stage play earlier this tournament.Â
King has started all six matches in Colombia, logging every minute in the last two matches. She now has 18 caps as a defender.
Dahlien, King and Sentnor were part of the Concacaf qualifying roster in 2023 that secured the USWYNT's spot in the U-20 World Cup. Already with World Cup experience is King who was on the U-17 roster and Sentnor who played on the U-20 squad, both in 2022.Â
The U.S. advanced to the Round of 16 after placing second in Group C standings during stage play. The team then made it to the quarterfinals after a win over Concacaf rival Mexico, and advanced to the semifinals after an epic comeback win over Germany.
