Skubisz Named ACC Defensive Player Of The Week
September 16, 2025 | Field Hockey
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - North Carolina field hockey goalkeeper Merritt Skubisz has been named the ACC's Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.Â
The true freshman was rock solid between the pipes for the Tar Heels over the weekend as they picked up big wins over App State and No. 9 Liberty, refusing to surrender a goal in either game across 60:00 minutes of play. In, Friday night's faceoff with the Mountaineers, she was the second half keeper and maintained the team's shutout. In her third career start against the highly-touted Flames, Skubisz held her own and then some to keep Liberty off the board in the first half.
It is the second straight season a Carolina goalkeeper has earned defensive weekly honors after a game against Liberty, as Abigail Taylor was given the same recognition last September. Skubisz is the first freshman under head coach Erin Matson to win the award.Â
Skubisz and the Tar Heels return to Karen Shelton Stadium this weekend for games against their west coast, conference brethren. They will take on Cal on Friday night at 6 p.m. ET before facing Stanford on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
