Travis Filar was added to the University of North Carolina volleyball coaching staff in May 2007. Filar owns previous coaching experience at Furman University, the University of Kentucky and the University of Memphis.
The fourth year assistant coach works primarily with the middle blockers. Filar also coordinates the team defense and blocking systems, and has coached two AVCA All-Americans in middle blocker Heather Brooks and libero Brianna Eskola in his tenure. Eskola finished her career as the all-time digs leader at UNC and in the ACC. Filar helped guide a defense in 2008 that was led by Eskola and middle blockers Brooks, Christine Vaughen, and Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland, that ranked first in opponent hitting percentage, first in digs per set and second in blocks per set in the ACC. In addition, the defense finished the season second in the country in digs per set.
The Davidson, N.C., native also coached three AVCA All-East Region players and four All-ACC performers over the last three seasons at UNC. The Tar Heels led the ACC in digs per set for the second year in a row in 2009 and return libero Kaylie Gibson, who ranked second in the league in digs per set.
Filar is a 2000 graduate of Furman University in Greenville, S.C., where he worked as an assistant coach and assistant camp director coaching four Southern Conference all-league performers from 2001-2003. After leaving Furman, Filar was a volunteer assistant at the University of Kentucky for two seasons. While working with the Wildcats, Filar also coached boys and girls basketball at Trinity Christian Academy in Lexington, Ky.
Filar joined the coaching staff at Memphis in 2005, where he primarily worked with the middle blockers and the team defensive systems. In his two seasons with the Tigers, he coached two AVCA All-American performers in Laura Cote'and Shelby Burton, three AVCA All-Midwest Region players and three Conference USA all-league performers, including the Libero of the Year in 2006. Memphis came within one win of the Conference USA title in 2006, ending the season with a 27-8 record.
Additionally, he has worked as an assistant volleyball clinician at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Girls Sports Camp atGardner-Webb University, as well as serving as a court coach at volleyball camps at Charlotte and Davidson. Prior to starting his coaching career, Filar played two seasons of men's club volleyball at Furman.
Filar is married to the former Natalie Muro, a four-year women's soccer letter winner at Furman. The couple has a daughter, Savanna Grace, born Feb. 10, 2009.
