COLUMBUS, OHIO -- North Carolina's women's soccer team completed an undefeated, untied regular season for the first time since 1998 Saturday night as seniors Anne Remy and Jena Kluegel scored first half goals to lift the Tar Heels past Ohio State 2-0 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Carolina has now won 25 successive games dating back to a 1-0 loss at Wake Forest on October 27, 2000.
UNC (16-0 overall, 7-0 ACC) was playing its first non-conference games since winning 2-0 at UAB on September 30. The Tar Heels struck quickly as Remy scored her eighth goal of the season at 6:39 assisted by Alyssa Ramsey. It was Ramsey's 12th assist of the campaign. Ramsey fed Remy in the center of the box with Remy finishing the chance from about five yards out. Kluegel added the insurance goal for UNC at 39:55 as she collected a loose ball in the center of the box and scored from about five yards out. The goal was unassisted and gave Kluegel eight scores on the season.
The game drew a crowd of 3,006 fans. The previous record crowd at Owens Stadium for Ohio State women's soccer was 804 fans against Notre Dame on October 1, 1995. It was the fourth time this season that Carolina has played before a new record crowd on its opponent's home field.
Coach Anson Dorrance saw the Tar Heels record their 10th shutout in 16 games this season. Goalkeepers Kristin DePlatchett and Jenni Branam each played one half in goal for Carolina. Jen Heaney made 10 saves for the Buckeyes who are now 9-8-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the Big Ten. Eight days ago the Buckeyes had upset fourth-ranked Penn State 2-1 at Owens Memorial Stadium when the Nittany Lions were ranked fourth in the nation.
UNC outshot the Buckeyes 28-3 and had seven corner kicks to three for OSU. DePlatchett made two first half saves for the Tar Heels while Ohio State had three defender saves in addition to the 10 goalkeeper stops.
Carolina finished its 16-match regular season with a 60-8 scoring advantage. The Tar Heels won all but two of their games by two or more goals.
UNC will be back in action next Thursday as the #1 seed in the 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at Spry Soccer Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. UNC's quarterfinal opponent on Thursday will be NC State. UNC defeated the Wolfpack two nights ago 4-2 in Chapel Hill. Complete seedings and game times will be announced Monday by the Atlantic Coast Conference office.
Saturday's game was a matchup between UNC head coach Anson Dorrance and former Tar Heel Lori Walker, '92, now head coach at Ohio State.
