Washington Huskies Win The Prestige - UNC Finishes Thirteenth

PALM DESERT, CALIF. - The University of Washington Huskies took top team honors at The Prestige at Palm Desert by shooting under-par all three rounds giving them a team total of 20 under-par 844. The University of Kansas and Colorado were five strokes behind in second place at 849 while Northwestern followed in fourth at eight strokes off the lead, 852. UC-Davis rounded out the top five in team standings at seven-under-par, 857.
The University of North Carolina's Dustin Bray had a tremendous tournament finishing tied for first with Washington's Brock Mackenzie for top medalist honors. The Asheboro Sophomore fired a third round 67 giving him a 13-under-par, 203 total. Rounding out the top five in individual scoring included Colorado's Joe Liley who placed third followed by a three-way tie for fourth with Pacific's Troy McKinley, Washington's John Robertson and UCLA's John Merrick. Robertson had the low round of the day with an eight-under-par, 64.
Other Tar Heels in action included Richard Treis who tied for 59th with a six-over-par, 222. Ramon Bescansa and Bob Cherry tied for 76th while teammate Jeremy Elliott finished in 84th place after a three-day total of thirteen-over par, 229.
The Tar Heels will next compete in the The Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Ponte Verde Beach, Florida begining February 18, 2002.
