CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - Two-time defending champion Virginia leads and 16th-ranked North Carolina is second after the first day of the 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Virginia's Aquatic and Fitness Center.
The 11th-ranked Cavaliers lead the field with 256.5 points after the first day of competition which included six events. Coach Frank Comfort's Tar Heels, seeking their first ACC title since 1998, are in second place with 211 points. Florida State is in third place with 142.5 points followed by NC State with 123 points. Maryland is in fifth place with 110 points followed by Clemson with 104 points, Georgia Tech with 96 points and Duke with 49 points.
North Carolina did not win an individual championship on the first day of competition but the Tar Heels did finish second in two events, third in three events and fourth in one event. Virginia swept both relays and Wahoo freshman Ian Prichard won the 500-yard freestyle in an ACC record time of 4:16.32. Florida State won two individual events and Clemson won one individual championship.
The Tar Heels opened the meet by finishing third in the 200-yard freestyle relay in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:20.82. Virginia won the title in a time of 1:20.20 and Florida State was second in 1:20.61. Carolina nipped Maryland for third place by one one-hundredth of a second. The Tar Heel relay included Kevin Erndl, Kert Johnson, Justin Donato and Michael Chenier.
UNC freshman Yuri Suguiyama finished second in the 500-yard freestyle behind Prichard's ACC record setting performance. Suguiyama's time was 4:22.26, a career best time which makes him the sixth fastest Tar Heel in history in the event. Carolina senior tri-captain Brad Kline finished fifth in a time of 4:25.44. Carolina sophomore Judd Glasco won the consolation final in 4:25.19 and sophomore Stephen Mohr finished 12th in 4:26.45. All four Tar Heels in the event met the NCAA provisional qualifying time, while Glasco and Mohr both turned in career best times in the consolation final heat.
Carolina junior Chris Helin finished second in the 200-yard individual medley in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:48.15. Helin was nipped by Clemson junior Matt Wilson, who touched in 1:48.10. Helin had finished fifth as a freshman and third as a sophomore in the event. Defending champion Chris Mousetis of Virginia finished fourth behind teammate Guy Yimsomruay. In the consolation heat, Tar Heels finished in places 10-14 with junior Justin Rossi 10th in a career best 1:50.97, sophomore Sean Quinn 11th in a career best 1:51.00, Sebastien Moity 12th in a career best 1:51.03, senior Dave Slawinski 13th in 1:51.20 and freshman Casey Coble 14th in 1:51.28.
In an amazingly close 50-yard freestyle, Tar Heel junior Kevin Erndl finished fourth in a time of 20.12. That time was just six one-hundredths of a second off Erndl's personal best which is a time that also shares the Tar Heel school record with Tod Schroeder who went 20.06 in 1990. Florida State senior Greg Main-Baillie won the championship in 20.00 while Virginia's Luke Anderson was second in 20.10 and NC State senior Braden Holloway third in 20.11. Defending champion Greg Solt of NC State finished fifth. Junior Kert Johnson clocked his career best time by going 20.56 seconds to finish 10th in the event while sophomore Michael Chenier was 16th in 20.98 seconds. Chenier's time of 20.81 seconds in the preliminaries was his career best time.
Carolina placed three divers in the top nine of the one-meter diving competition. Sophomore Stephen Krebs finished third with 254.95 points, improving from a fifth-place finish last year. The championship was won by Florida State freshman Josh Edelman who scored 283.0 points. Clemson's Craig Thomas was second. UNC sophomore Rob McMillen improved from ninth last year to seventh this year in the event with a final score of 234.15. Freshman Eric Poitras finished in ninth place.
Carolina took third place in the 400-yard medley relay as the team of Johnson, Quinn, Moity and Erndl finished in 3:17.07. Virginia won the championship in 3:15.64 while Florida State finished second in 3:16.10.
