S&D's Kirk Kumbier To Return To Michigan Roots, Leave Tar Heel Coaching Staff
May 13, 2026 | Swimming & Diving
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of North Carolina associate head swimming and diving Coach Kirk Kumbier has announced he will be stepping down to take the associate head coach position with Club Wolverine in Ann Arbor, Mich. The move marks a homecoming for Kumbier, a Michigan native and CW alum, as he returns to one of the most storied club programs in American swimming.
Kumbier joined the Tar Heels in May 2022 and was promoted to associate head coach and director of recruiting in June 2024. During his four seasons in Chapel Hill, he was instrumental in transforming Carolina's sprint program and elevating both the men's and women's teams to national prominence.
"Kirk has been a pivotal part of our staff from the moment he stepped on deck," said head coach Mark Gangloff. "His technical expertise in the sprint events and his tireless work on the recruiting trail have fundamentally changed the trajectory of our program. While we will miss his energy and leadership, we are thrilled for him to have this opportunity to return home and impact the swimming community in Ann Arbor."
A Legacy of Excellence at Carolina
Kumbier's tenure is defined by several landmark achievements for the Tar Heels:
As Kumbier departs, he shares the following thoughts:
Â
"I am truly honored for the opportunity to have served our student-athletes alongside Coach Gangloff and our staff at UNC the past four years. I deeply value all that we have built together and want to express my gratitude to the team, our staff, UNC, Tar Heel families and fans, and all those who helped us achieve success along the way. I have loved every minute of my time here and the people are what made it so special.
Â
"While we will now cheer on the Tar Heels from afar, I am confident they have a strong foundation and will have great coaches to help them continue to represent Carolina well. With Coach Gangloff at the helm, there will surely be a continued focus to compete and contend at the highest levels on the NCAA, World and Olympic stages as the team heads into LA2028 and for years to come. I look forward to seeing the Heels thrive.
Â
"As far as the future goes, it's exciting to start a new adventure with a homecoming back to my roots in Ann Arbor. While I have spent most of my career at the college level, I know club programs are the backbone of American swimming where we develop (and launch) our age group and senior level athletes that go on to achieve at the highest levels. I look forward to diving into that process with CW athletes and families; collaboration and continued learning with CW Head Coach Dr. Josh White and the staff; and the opportunity to bring my unique experience, expertise and perspective back to CW.
Â
"Tar Heels, it's been an honor to coach you. You made our time in Chapel Hill unforgettable. Can't wait to see what you do in the future!"
Â
Carolina wishes both Kirk and Kayla well in their next endeavors and a national search for their replacements will begin immediately.
