UNC Men Golfers Finish Ninth At Mercedes-Benz Collegiate

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLA. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team finished ninth at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship with an 896 total after rounds of 310-293-293. Florida captured the team title of the 54-hole event with an eight-over-par 872. Tennessee was the runner-up, two shots back at 874 while North Florida finished third at 884, Wake Forest finished fourth at 887 and NC State finished fifth with an 890 total.
Camilo Villegas of Florida captured the individual title with a six-under 210 total after firing rounds of 71-66-73. Vanderbilt's Brandt Snedeker and NC State's Garth Mulroy finished two shots back in a tie for runner-up honors with 212 totals. Scott Jamieson of Augusta State finished fourth at 214 while Texas' Jason Hartwick placed fifth with a 215 total.
The Tar Heels were led by Dustin Bray and Ramon Bescansa who tied for 10th place with 218 totals. Bray carded rounds of 79-68-71 while Bescansa shot 74-74-70. Jeremy Elliott tied for 48th place with a 229 total while Bob Cherry tied for 60th place at 234 and Richard Treis tied for 64th place at 236.
The Mercedes-Benz Collegiate was played at the Sawgrass Country Club which features a par 72, 6,895-yard layout. The Tar Heels' next action is March 11-12 when they participate in the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla.
