COLUMBUS, OHIO - North Carolina's men's golf team fired a 292 in Friday's third round and is tied for sixth place at six-over-par 858 with one round left to play in the 72-hole event. Georgia Tech leads the field of 30 teams, which fought fierce winds, with a one-over 853 total. Tulsa stands one shot back in second place at 854 while Washington is third at 855 and Minnesota and Texas are tied for fourth place with 856 totals. For the third day in a row, there is a rain delay so nine teams have yet to complete their round. However, those teams are all between 17 and 30 in the standings.
"It was a tough day out there for everyone today," said North Carolina Head Coach John Inman. We didn't play great, but we hung in there giving ourselves the chance to jump up in the standings tomorrow."
Graeme McDowell of Alabama-Birmingham grabbed the individual lead after firing a four-under-par 67 in the third round for an eight-under 205 total. Hunter Mahan of Oklahoma State is one shot back in second place at 206 while first and second-round leader Brock Mackenzie of Washington is in third place with a 207 total. Adam Rubinson of TCU and Justin Walters of NC State are tied for fourth place with 208 totals while a trio of players are tied for sixth place at four-under -- Georgia Tech's Troy Matteson, Tulsa's Chris Noel and UNLV's Ryan Moore who has yet to complete his round.
Carolina's Dustin Bray, this year's ACC champion, and Ramon Bescansa are tied for 13th place with 211 totals. Bray carded rounds of 68-68-75 while Bescansa shot 69-72-70. Bob Cherry is presently tied for 60th place with a 217 total while Brad Moldin is tied for 89th at 220 and Jeremy Elliott is tied for 119 at 223.
The final round will be played Saturday at Ohio State's Scarlet Course, a par 72, 7,222-yard layout. The Tar Heels begin the final round off the first tee at 7:00 a.m.
