FORT WAYNE, IND. - The second-ranked University of North Carolina women's soccer team got goals from forwards Alyssa Ramsey and Susan Bush as well as defender Catherine Reddick to defeat seventh-ranked Notre Dame 4-2 at the IPFW Soccer Showcase Friday night. The event is an annual weekend of high school and college soccer games played on the campus of Indiana University/Purdue University at Fort Wayne.
oth teams used their benches extensively in Friday's scrimmage. With the help of an own goal, UNC built a safe 3-0 lead in the game before the Fighting Irish staged a late rally.
Alyssa Ramsey opened the scoring in the 17th minute, finding herself open for a shot into the right side netting after an Anne Felts left side corner kick. In the 41st minute, Catherine Reddick caught Irish goalie Erika Bohn coming off her line near the left post, scoring into the other side of the net for the 2-0 halftime lead.
UNC's lead grew to 3-0 just 73 seconds into the second half after a cross from the right side was mishandled by Bohn and went over the end line for a Tar Heel own goal. The Fighting Irish broke through in the 64th minute on a goal by Amy Warner, assisted by Amanda Guertin and Maggie Manning.
Susan Bush scored six minutes after Warner's goal on a sharp-angled strike from the right side that skipped under Notre Dame reserve goalie Lauren Kent for a 4-1 UNC lead at 69:21. Notre Dame added the last goal of the game at 74:32 as Manning scored, assisted by Warner.
oth teams had 11 shots in the game but UNC dominated the corner kicks 13-2. Three different goalkeepers played for UNC in the contest and they combined for five saves. Senior Jenni Branam had three saves and freshman Tyler Griffin registered two.
Carolina played the Fighting Irish minus four outstanding freshman players who are currently representing the United States with the Under-19 National Team at the World Championships in Vancourver, British Columbia. They include forward Linsday Tarpley, midfielder Lori Chalupny and defenders Kendall Fletcher and Amy Steadman. Steadman, who tore an anterior cruciate ligament for the second straight year in the Under-19 National Team's first game in the tournament, will red-shirt this season and retain four years of athletic eligibility at UNC. The other three will not make their debuts in UNC uniforms until the Heels host their home opener on September 6 against Guilford at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
Carolina opens its 2002 regular season next Friday at 8 p.m. against the host Nebraska Cornhuskers, ranked #10 in the preseason coaches poll, in the adidas Invite in Lincoln, Neb. UNC will also play Southern California in the adidas Invite at Lincoln next Sunday at 12 noon.
