LINCOLN, NEB. - Second-ranked North Carolina needed a goal by junior striker Alyssa Ramsey at 72:28 of the game in order to earn a 1-1 tie with 10th-ranked Nebraska Friday night at the Abbott Sports Complex. The match was the second game in the adidas Invite being hosted Friday night by the University of Nebraska. A crowd of 4,830 witnessed the contest.
The game was the season opener for both teams. The Cornhuskers scored at 1:55 of the match on an unassisted goal by forward Christy Harms. Nebraska held the lead for over 70 minutes before Ramsey tied the game on a direct kick, forcing the match into overtime.
"It was a great game. Nebraska stretched us to the limit. A tie is probably a fair result," said UNC Head Coach Anson Dorrance.
Dorrance played a makeshift lineup Friday night with four of Carolina's regular rotation players missing the trip. Forward Lindsay Tarpley, midfielder Lori Chalupny and defender Kendall Fletcher are playing with the U.S. Under 19 National Team at the World Championships in Canada and will rejoin the team in time for next weekend's Carolina Nike Classic in Chapel Hill. Midfielder Sara Randolph is still recovering from a staph infection and may return for next weekend's Nike Carolina Classic.
The game was the first non-win for the Tar Heels in a season opener since September 1, 1985 when UNC and George Mason tied 3-3 in Chapel Hill.
The game was only the 27th overtime game in UNC history and the Tar Heels now stand 13-3-11 in those games. The last overtime game was October 17, 2000 when the Tar Heels lost 3-2 at Florida State in double overtime. UNC's last tie came on September 19, 1997 when the Tar Heels tied Notre Dame 2-2 in a match at South Bend, Ind. That game, however, was halted in the 72nd minute because of lightning.
UNC will continue play in the adidas Invite against USC Sunday at 12 noon. USC lost the first match Friday night to Wisconsin by a 1-0 score.
