CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Both Big Ten teams came out on top Saturday in the first day of field hockey action at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, played at the University of North Carolina's Francis E. Henry Stadium. In rain that continued throughout the afternoon, Michigan defeated North Carolina 2-0 in the day's first game and Iowa beat Wake Forest 1-0 in the second game.
Action continues on Sunday when UNC (0-1) plays Iowa (1-0) at noon and Wake Forest (0-1) takes on Michigan (1-0) at 2:30 p.m. There is no charge for admission to Henry Stadium. Michigan junior April Fronzoni scored both goals for the Wolverines, the first on a rebound of a save by UNC's Amy Tran in the 29th minute of play. In the second period, Fronzoni scored unassisted after a long run to put her team up 2-0 in the 50th minute of play. Michigan, the defending NCAA champion, outshot UNC 13-1,. Amy Tran, UNC's senior goalkeeper, made eight saves.
"I thought Michigan played a very good game," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "They gave us lots of trouble. We knew they were a fast team, but it's difficult for us to duplicate that in practice.
"A game like this so early in the season is a learning opportunity. Now we have a chance to play better tomorrow against Iowa, and that's what's great about a tournament like this one."
In the second game, Iowa sophomore Sarah Dawson scored in the 13th minute of play and the Hawkeyes held on to win behind eight saves from sophomore goalkeeper Barbara Weinberg, who stopped two Wake Forest penalty strokes within a minute of each other early in the second half. Wake Forest totaled 19 shots to just five by Iowa. In addition to the two second-half penalty strokes, Wake Forest had five corners in the second half, six for the game. Iowa totaled four.
UNC Notes:Sophomore Laura Douglas was voted the Specators' Player of the Game. UNC fans will vote for the game's top player following all of this year's contests ... UNC was without sophomore forward Kelsey Keeran, who is out with a broken jaw ... The loss was UNC's first in a season-opener since 1992, when the Tar Heels started the year with a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Old Dominion
