CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Atlantic Coast Conference teams North Carolina and Wake Forest defeated their Big Ten foes Sunday afternoon to even the score at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and send all four teams away with 1-1 season records. UNC defeated Iowa 2-1 in overtime and Wake Forest beat Michigan 2-0 at Francis E. Henry Stadium to wrap up the two-day event.
"I'm pleased that the ACC was able to come away with wins today after the Big Ten won both of yesterday's games," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We all accomplished what we were after from these games, which was to get an idea of areas we need to work on. The parity displayed this weekend bodes well for an exciting season."
UNC, which lost 2-0 to Michigan on Saturday, took an early lead in the first game of the day when sophomore Katy Potter scored off a deflection in the fifth minute of play. Iowa tied the game in the 52nd minute when sophomore Lauren Stiver scored out of a cluster of players between the goal and UNC goalkeeper Amy Tran.
The game went into overtime tied at 1-1. Just over three minutes into the 15-minute period, UNC senior Meredith Keller shot from the top of the circle and sophomore Kerry Falgowski dove to put back the rebound off the save by Iowa goalkeeper Barbara Weinberg. The win broke a string of five overtime losses for UNC and boosted the Tar Heels' series record against Iowa to 12-2.
"We had to grind out a win against a very strong, solid Iowa team," Shelton said. "I'm proud of the team for gutting through it, but we've got to play better if we want to reach our potential."
In the second game, Wake Forest scored a goal in each period to defeat the Wolverines after losing 1-0 to Iowa on Saturday. In the 23rd minute of play, Demon Deacon senior Maria Whitehead put in a shot off a pass from outside the circle by junior Kelly Doton. With just over a minute remaining in the game, senior Heather Aughinbaugh scored off a deflection after a penalty corner attempt.
Wake Forest's next action will be on Thursday, when the Deacons host the U.S. National Team for an exhibition game. The other three schools play Saturday, when Michigan hosts Central Michigan and Iowa and North Carolina begin play in the Temple Invitational in Philadelphia. Iowa opens against Temple and Carolina against Louisville, but the two could meet on Sunday for a rematch of today's game.
The 2002 ACC/Big Ten Challenge marked the first year of a four-year agreement in which the event will rotate between the four schools. Michigan will host the 2003 Challenge, and it will move on to Wake in 2004 and Iowa in 2005.
