CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Four members of the University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team were named Monday to the NCAA Division I All-America Teams chosen by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. Sophomore attackman Jed Prossner was named to the third team while senior midfielder Austin Garrison, junior defenseman Ronnie Staines and sophomore goalkeeper Paul Spellman were all named honorable mention All-Americas.
In addition, Garrison, a three-year starter in the midfield, was named Monday to play in the USILA/STX Division I North South Classic on Saturday, June 7. That game will be played at 3 p.m. on Campus Field on the Sacred Heart University campus in Fairfield, Conn. UNC senior midfielder Steven Will (Phoenix, Md.) has been named as an alternate for that game. Both will play for the South Team.
Prossner led the Tar Heel representatives on the All-America Team. An Easton, Md. native, Prossner has started each of the first 26 games of his UNC career and led Carolina in scoring each of the past two years. This year, Prossner had 25 goals and 13 assists for 38 points and also was among the leaders on the team with 41 ground balls.
Garrison (New Canaan, Conn.) was third on the team in scoring with 31 points on 20 goals and 11 assists for 31 points. He scored on .345 percent of his shots in 2003, the second highest rate on the team. From Severna Park, Md., Staines continues to progress as one of the top defensemen in the nation. He has started each of Carolina's 38 games over the past three years and always draws the top attackman on the opposing team.
Spellman had a tremendous sophomore year as he saved .614 percent of the shots on goal taken against him. He had 170 saves and only 107 goals allowed in 2003. His goals against average was a stingy 8.18 and he led Carolina in ground balls with 56. Spellman has started the first 26 games of his Tar Heel career.
