Chapel Hill, N.C. - The No. 15 North Carolina Tar Heels used a mix of timely hitting, effective pitching and solid defense to take the second of a three game series from the Maryland Terrapins, 7-1, Saturday at Boshamer Stadium. Junior Chris Iannetta led Carolina at the plate with four hits and three runs batted in. Junior starter Garry Bakker scattered seven hits over 6.1 innings to even his record at 4-4. The UNC bullpen was stellar once again, as Robert Woodard, Kevin Brower and Scott Senatore threw 2.2 perfect innings in relief of Bakker.
The Terrapins got on the board in the top of the second thanks to back-to-back hits by designated hitter Jason Maxey and third baseman Dan Melvin. Maxey lined a double down the right field line with one out that just caught the chalk, and came around to score on Melvin's single to right center.
Carolina struck back in the third, scoring a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. Shortstop Greg Mangum was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and advanced to third on a single by left fielder Jay Cox. Iannetta then drove a double to left, scoring Mangum. The Tar Heels took the lead when Cox scored on an RBI groundout by right fielder Marshall Hubbard.
UNC added two more in the fifth when Iannetta drove his 10th home run of the season off the scoreboard in left center, scoring Cox who had walked.
Hubbard provided the Tar Heels with an insurance run in the seventh. His double to left scored Cox from second and extended his hitting streak to a season-high 17 games. Hubbard's blow chased Maryland starter Kevin Hart, who turned in a solid 6.2-inning performance. Hart held UNC to five runs on eight hits and struck out seven, but saw his record fall to 2-8 with the loss.
Carolina added two more in eighth to extend the lead to 7-1. Mike Daniel led off the frame with a single and swiped second to move into scoring position. After a Wes Moyer sacrifice moved Daniel to third, center fielder Chase Younts drove him home with an RBI single. Younts would later come around to score the seventh run of the day on an error by Maryland second baseman Matt Maropis.
The Tar Heel defense shined for a second straight game, turning a pair of important double plays and consistently helping Bakker escape trouble. In addition, Iannetta erased a pair of would-be Terrapin base stealers. UNC has committed only one error in two games after collecting six in its last Atlantic Coast Conference series at Duke.
With the win, Carolina improves to 34-11 on the year, 13-7 in the ACC. Maryland falls to 19-29, 3-17 in the ACC. The two clubs will finish the series Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
