The University of North Carolina volleyball team split pair of matches Saturday on the final day of the Hampton Inn/Kaepa Temple Classic in Philadelphia. In the morning tilt, the Tar Heels fell to Ohio State in four games. UNC bounced back to defeat tournament host Temple in the evening, 30-19, 30-25, 30-23. After dropping game one to the Buckeyes, the Tar Heels were solid throughout the second frame. Carolina built a ten-point lead to get to 20-10, and the two sides traded points until the score was 28-18. Ohio State rallied to cut the lead to five, but Caroline deRoeck and Katie Wright teamed up for a block to stop the run. Molly Pyles, who led the squad with 19 kills, put away the game-winning point. Pyles' 12th kill of the morning was number 1,000 for her career. oth the Tar Heels and the Buckeyes hit .207 for the match, and despite leading 26-24 in the fourth game, UNC was unable to extend the contest to a fifth game. Carolina played 13 of its 16 players in the nightcap, and cruised to a three-game win over Temple. Sophomore Meg Eckert recorded a match-high 10 kills, and Norma Cortez tallied 31 assists. The Tar Heels were quite strong defensively, holding the Owls to a hitting percentage of .092. Taylor Rayfield led the team with 10 digs. Wright and sophomore Amy Beaver were named to the all-tournament team. UNC is back in action Tuesday night, when the team will pay a visit to in-state rival Charlotte. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
