CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - Despite a pair of wins each by Lindsey Marck and gia Santoro, the North Carolina women's swimming and diving team fell to 15th-ranked Virginia 179-119 in dual meet action Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers improved to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the ACC with the win while UNC fell to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the ACC.
Virginia dominated the meet by winning the first four events to build a solid early lead and sweeping all the freestyle events, all of which added up to a lopsided win for the Cavaliers against a Carolina team which was tied with Virginia in the national rankings at 15th.
UNC won only five of 11 events with freshman Lindsey Marck and junior diver gia Santoro each claiming two victories. Marck won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:00.14 to lead a 1-2 Tar Heel finish in that event. Senior Jessie Brosch finished second in 2:02.50. Marck won the 100-yard butterfly in 54.88 while UNC junior Emily Carroll placed second.
Santoro's score of 267.68 led her to victory in one-meter diving as she keyed a 1-2-3 Tar Heel sweep. Sophomore Lauren Karatanevski was second and freshman Erika Matheis took third. Santoro won the three-meter diving with her best score of the season at 283.58, while Erika Matheis was second and Lauren Karatanevski placed third.
Carolina's other event victory came in the 100-yard breaststroke as junior Lizzy Bruce clocked a 1:03.80 to secure a win by .07 of a second over Virginia's Jenny Steiner.
Coach Frank Comfort's Tar Heels will return to action with their final two dual meets of the season next week. UNC will face off against East Carolina on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and then the Tar Heels will meet 12th-ranked Maryland next Saturday at 11 a.m. Both meets will be at Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill.
