Flack Slugs No. 8 Tar Heels Past Winthrop, 13-5

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman third baseman Chad Flack homered in both the first and second innings and drove in a career-best seven runs as No. 8 North Carolina (37-10-1) cruised to a 13-5 win over Winthrop (35-15) Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium, where the Tar Heels need just one victory to tie the single-season school record for home wins.
Flack followed a three-run shot in the first with a grand slam in the second for his first career multi-homer game. He is now the fourth Tar Heel with two homers in a game this season, and his seven RBI tie Justin Webb for the most by a UNC player this season. Webb homered twice and drove in seven at Virginia Tech on March 11. With two Tuesday, Flack now has 12 home runs this season. Classmate Seth Williams hit his team-best 13th homer of the year in the eighth, a two-run shot that extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games.
Outfielder Jay Cox tied a career high with four hits on the night, and shortstop Josh Horton and Webb each added three hits. Second baseman Greg Mangum added two hits, and designated hitter Matt Ellington drove in two runs to raise his team-best total to 47. The Tar Heels, who scored 28 runs in two games with Winthrop this season, pounded out 18 hits.
In a predetermined staff outing, UNC starter Robert Woodard remained unbeaten on the season with his sixth victory. He went three innings and allowed one unearned run on three hits. Woodard, who earned a win at NC State in his last appearance, struck out one and did not issue a walk. Freshman Tyler Trice allowed just two hits over three shutout innings in relief.
First baseman Heath Rollins had two hits to lead the Winthrop offense. Four different Eagles drove in runs on the night.
After Ellington plated the first run of the day with a single up the middle in the first, Flack connected with the three-run homer to left, his first of the day. The shot scored Webb, who singled to right, and Ellington for a 4-0 Tar Heel lead. Following an infield single by Cox, Winthrop starter Chase Edwards (1-2) was lifted in favor of righty Tyler Flail, who later allowed an RBI double to Carolina catcher Benji Johnson for the final run of the inning. Edwards failed to retire a batter and allowed five runs on four hits and a walk.
After the Eagles scored an unearned run in the top of the second to cut the lead to 5-1, Flack struck again the second with the grand slam to left center for an eight-run Carolina lead. Walks to Mangum and Ellington, as well as a single by Webb loaded the bases for Flack's second homer of the night.
The Tar Heels tacked on two in the fifth to push the lead to 11-1. After a Chase Younts single, Mangum doubled to right center to drive in the first run. He later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ellington for a 10-run cushion.
Following two runs by the Eagles in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by shortstop Matt Repec and a run-scoring fielder's choice by second baseman Chris Carrara, Carolina added two in the eighth on Williams' home run to left center for the final margin of 13-5.
The Tar Heels are now 29-3-1 in Chapel Hill this season. The 1993 and 2000 teams both won 30 times at Boshamer Stadium. Carolina has five home games remaining.
The Tar Heels return to action Wednesday against No. 25 Coastal Carolina at 6 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium before traveling to Florida State for a three-game series this weekend.
