CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Ranked ninth nationally, the North Carolina baseball team (36-10-1, 15-6-1 ACC) is in the midst of a 10-day break for final exams, and TarHeelBlue.com takes a look at the facts and figures that can sum up the exciting 2005 season to this point. The Tar Heels open the stretch run versus Coastal Carolina May 11 at Boshamer Stadium.
- Number of losses when leading after six innings. Carolina's bullpen has been outstanding this entire season, as evidenced by the Tar Heels 28-1 record when leading after six innings. The only game UNC has lost when leading after six was the 4-3, 11-inning loss to Arizona State on March 4 at the Keith LeClair Classic.
- Number of wins needed at Boshamer Stadium to tie the school record for home victories. The Tar Heels are 28-3-1 in Chapel Hill, and the record for home wins is 30 set in 1993 and 2000. Carolina opened the year 22-0 at The Bosh for a program-best home start. The Tar Heels have five home games remaining on the schedule.
- Number of freshmen to play in at least 40 games this season. Rookies have had an immeasurable impact on the Tar Heels this season, and Josh Horton, Chad Flack and Seth Williams have played in at least 40 games on the year. Horton is batting .370 with 30 RBI, Flack checks in at .342 with 10 home runs and 34 RBI and Williams is batting .308 with 12 homers and 31 RBI. Classmates Reid Fronk, Matt Spencer, Kyle Shelton, Benji Johnson, Andy Gale and Andrew Carignan have also made significant contributions this season.
- Number of Atlantic Coast Conference three-game sweeps by UNC. The Tar Heels have swept four league opponents for just the third time since 1990. Carolina swept Wake Forest, Virginia and Maryland on consecutive weekends for its first-ever run of three straight sweeps in ACC action.
- Number of players with 30 or more runs batted in. A year ago, Marshall Hubbard (83), Chris Iannetta (71) and Sammy Hewitt (46) all drove in more than 40 runs but no one else plated more than 27. This season, the Tar Heels have shown a very balanced offense, and Matt Ellington (45), Justin Webb (36), Chad Flack (34), Seth Williams (31) and Josh Horton (30) all have at least 30 RBI. Jay Cox is not too far behind with 27.
- Number of strikeouts needed by Andrew Miller for a single-season career high. The Gainesville, Fla., lefty has 83 strikeouts in just 72.2 innings this season and needs just six to surpass his 2004 total of 88. Miller has 171 career strikeouts and needs 29 more to reach 200 for his career.
- Number of shutouts this season. Carolina hurlers have combined for a school record-tying seven shutouts this year. The Tar Heels also had seven shutouts in 2004, 2000 and 1978. UNC opened the season with three straight shutouts for the first time in program history.
- Number of saves for redshirt sophomore Matt Danford. Danford's eight saves are fourth in the ACC, 24th nationally and equal the number posted by Michael Gross a year ago. With just one more save Danford will tie Gordon Douglas for seventh on the single-season save list. Danford is 4-1 with a 1.24 earned run average this season.
- Number of walks by sophomore righty Robert Woodard. The Charlotte native has walked just 10 batters and struck out 58 in 67.1 innings for a team-best 5.8-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio. He is 5-0 with a 2.41 ERA, which ranks fifth in the ACC.
- Number of home runs by freshman outfielder Seth Williams. Williams' 12 homers are the most ever by a rookie at Carolina. He ranks third in the ACC and leads all conference freshmen. Williams is slugging .667, which is third in the league, and the 12 home runs have come in just 120 at-bats.
- Number of ACC wins for North Carolina. The Tar Heels are 15-6-1 in conference play this season. The 15 victories are the third-most in school history in ACC action. Carolina won 17 conference games in both 1990 and 2002.
- Number of multi-hit games by freshman Chad Flack. Flack's 18 multi-hit games lead the team. He is batting .342 with 10 homers and 34 RBI. He had an 11-game hitting streak earlier this season and has played in 45 of 47 games this season.
- Number of combined wins for sophomores Daniel Bard, Andrew Miller and Robert Woodard. As freshmen, this group combined for 22 of the Tar Heels' 43 wins in 2004. This time around, the trio has already tallied 20 of Carolina's 36 victories. Miller is 8-1, Bard is 7-2 and Woodard is 5-0.
- Number of appearances by junior reliever Jonathan Hovis. The Gastonia righty needs just one more appearance to tie his single-season career high of 2004. He has pitched in both set-up and closing roles and ranks second in the ACC with a 2.03 ERA. Hovis is 5-1 with four saves.
- Number of RBI in ACC play by senior Justin Webb. Webb has been at his best in conference action as 28 of his career-best 36 RBI and six of his career-best nine home runs have come in conference play. He has had several big games, including seven RBI at Virginia Tech, five versus Virginia and four at NC State.
- Number of RBI for redshirt sophomore Matt Ellington. Ellington has driven in nearly one run a game with a team-best 45 RBI in 46 games played. He also leads the team with 59 hits in 178 at-bats and has a career-best eight home runs.
- Number of consecutive games played by senior second baseman Greg Mangum. Mangum has been the table setter at the top of the Tar Heels' line-up for each of the last three seasons. This time around, he is batting .278 with team-highs of 42 runs scored and nine stolen bases.
