IOWA CITY, Iowa -- North Carolina picked up its second shutout victory in as many games with a 1-0 field hockey win over host Iowa Sunday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Grant Field. UNC (2-0) opened the season on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Michigan.
Wake Forest also won both its games in Iowa, giving the ACC teams a sweep of their Big Ten opponents.
Sunday's only goal came from junior Rachel Dawson, a midfielder from Berlin, N.J., on a penalty corner 21 minutes into the game. Sophomore Heather Kendell (pushout) and junior Ashley Judge (stick stop) picked up assists on the play, which put UNC ahead for good.
The Tar Heel defense again held its opponent scoreless as senior goalkeeper Katy Tran made three saves.
UNC had 13 shots, eight in the second half, to five by the Hawkeyes. The Tar Heels drew eight penalty corners to four by Iowa.
"I'm delighted with the weekend and the fact that we came away with two wins and two shutouts," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "Both wins were hard-fought games.
"At this point in the season, we're looking for our weaknesses and I think we saw some things in these two games that we need to work on. I was pleased that we played better in the second half in both games."
Next up for the Tar Heels is a trip to William & Mary. UNC meets the Tribe in Williamsburg, Va., on Saturday at 1 p.m. Carolina's home opener is next Monday, Sept. 5, at 3 p.m. against James Madison.
