CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 19 Virginia women's swimming and diving team led from start to finish Saturday afternoon in defeating No. 21 North Carolina 167-133 at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium, handing UNC its first ACC dual-meet loss of the season.
Virginia remained undefeated in the ACC at 4-0 and the Wahoos are 4-3 overall. North Carolina is 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the ACC.
The Wahoos won 11 of the 16 events in the meet as Carolina was unable to build any momentum in order to make a comeback and pull off the upset victory. Virginia came into the meet having lost to only the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 12 teams in the nation. Carolina's two losses this year are to No. 1-ranked Georgia and the 19th-ranked Cavaliers.
Five different Tar Heel women individually won events on Saturday. Saturday marked the final home meet for five UNC women's swimmers and divers. The senior class consists of Lizzy Bruce, Emily Carroll, Mary Margaret Gamblin, gia Santoro and Amanda Smith.
Bruce and Smith each were key in their final home meet as each posted an individual win. Smith won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.10 and Bruce took top honors in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:16.95.
Carolina's other winners were freshman Mandi Arak in one-meter diving, sophomore Kelsey Morrissy in the 50-yard freestyle and sophomore Lindsey Marck in the 100-yard butterfly.
North Carolina ends its 2005-06 dual meet season when the Tar Heels swim at Maryland next Saturday at 11 a.m.
