NEWTON, Mass. - The No. 6 North Carolina field hockey team shut out host Boston College, ranked fourth in the nation, 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Newton Campus Field. The Atlantic Coast Conference win was the first of the season for UNC, now 10-4 overall and 1-3 in ACC play. The Eagles fell to 11-3 overall, 2-2 ACC.
"This was a significant win," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "It was our first this season against a team ranked higher than us, and the first against an ACC team. It was a good day for us."
The Tar Heels' first goal came just three minutes into the contest when sophomore Britt van Beek flipped in a shot from in front of the cage, and the score stood at 1-0 through the rest of the half.
Almost 15 minutes into the second half, freshman Danielle Forword made it 2-0 with her ninth goal of the season. Nine minutes later, junior Alli Tanner added a goal to put UNC up 3-0. The final goal was by junior Jesse Gey, who put back a rebound after a saved shot with 6:49 remaining in the game.
For the second game in a row, UNC won 4-0 behind goals from four different players. "I'm really pleased with the versatility we're showing," Shelton said. "Boston College gave us a lot to handle. This was a difficult game and the final score wasn't reflective of the quality of competition."
Unlike the final score, the game statistics were nearly even, with UNC getting off 17 shots to BC's 15 and each team drawing six penalty corners. Freshman goalkeeper Brianna O'Donnell made a season-high eight saves for UNC to earn a shutout for the fourth time in the last five games. Julia Berkowitz had six for the Eagles, who had won six in a row coming into Saturday's game.
UNC will stay in the Boston area for a Sunday matchup with Yale. The neutral-site game will be played at at Newton College Field.
