
Morrissy and Harris Lead Tar Heels To Swimming Wins at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina's men's and women's swimming and diving teams posted victories Saturday afternoon in their first meet at Duke's Aquatics Center since 1985 as the Tar Heel men won 177-113 and the UNC women prevailed 178-115. Both UNC teams improved to 1-2 on the season after losing earlier dual meets to nationnally-ranked opponents Georgia and Minnesota.
The win provided UNC with a pair of points in the 2007-08 Carlyle Cup competition betwwen Carolina and Duke, upping the Tar Heels' lead in that tussle to 6 points to 1.5 points so far this school year.
The UNC men won 13 events and the Tar Heel women 12 events en route to the triumph.
Philip Owen was one of the key players for the Tar Heels as he obliterated the Duke Aquatics Center pool record in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:27.17.
Kelsey Morrissy led the way for the women with two individual wins (50, 100 free) while swimming on two winning relays while Lindsey Marck captured both butterfly events while swimming on the 400-yard medley relay team which set a Duke Aquatics Center pool record. Whitney Sprague had two individual wins (200, 500 free) and Megan Steeves swam on both winning relays.
Steeves also broke Sue Walsh's pool record in the 200-yard backstroke by winning in 2:03.03. Walsh's record had stood for 23 years. Alison Clemens also swam on the winning 400 medley relay and had an individual win in the 100 breast.
Other women's winners were Katie Marsh in the 200 breast and Aubrette Biegel in the 200 IM.
Freshman Tyler Harris led the men's triumph with wins in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM. Senior Ryan Funderburk came out on top in both diving events by wide margins of victory.
Freshman Josh Hafkin, Vinny Pryor, Tommy Wyher and senior Zack Swartz led off the meet with a win in the 400-yard medley relay.
Carolina spread out the remainder of its individual wins as Josh Hafkin, Tommy Wyher, Philip Owen, Jason McLaughlin, Keith Laabs, Joe Kinderwater and Robert Grimmett-Norris each were ranked on the top of the scoreboard in one event on the afternoon.
UNC returns to action by hosting the annual Janis Hape Dowd Nike Cup Invitational next Thursday through Saturday at Koury Natatorium. Prelims each day begin at 10 a.m. with finals each night at 6 p.m.
