CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A key moment in the young lacrosse season for the North Carolina Tar Heels comes Saturday when Coach John Haus' youth-laden team hosts the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Fetzer Field at 1 p.m. The Tar Heels (4-1) are ranked No. 15 this week by the Nike Inside Lacrosse poll while the Fighting Irish (2-1) is ranked No. 14 in the same poll.
Notre Dame has defeated North Carolina three of the past four years so a win over the Irish would be a big lift for the Heels as the next four Saturdays bring games against Duke, Maryland, Johns Hopkins and Virginia.
The meeting is the first between the two teams in Chapel Hill since 2003. Notre Dame beat the Tar Heels at Fetzer Field in 2003, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. in 2005 and at South Bend, Ind. in 2006.
UNC's lone win this decade against the Irish came at Notre Dame in 2004.
The Tar Heels are a youthful bunch in 2007 with only four seniors on the roster. The depth chart is filled with sophomores and freshmen but this team has already matched its win total of 2006 only five games into the season. Last year's team did not win its fourth game last year until the season's 13th match.
The game will be broadcast live on ACC Select and live stats will be available via Gametracker.
